Hi, my name’s Jack Mumford and I have been at SMH Group for 2 and a half years. I volunteered for work experience at the Chesterfield office back in February 2023, on what was intended to be a deferred year before I went to university. From that work experience, I was offered a permanent role in the Sheffield office and took that rather than pursue my university plans and started full time work in May 2023. I started the role knowing very little about accountancy and now confidently complete tax returns, VAT returns, sets of accounts for various sizes of business and complete audit fieldwork for large clients. Everyone in my office, and in the wider group, is a testament to the culture at SMH Group, which is a strong and positive environment, being client-centric but also supportive of all staff. The support I receive from my manager is excellent, both personally and professionally. I feel able to do work in my own way and manage my own workload. As well as this, I can work flexibly, working at other offices or at home if the need arises.
Whilst growing professionally at SMH group in a sense of learning new skills and about the world of finance, I have also grown personally, developing my confidence and adapting to the world of work. During my two and a half years, I have passed my Level 3 AAT and have one exam left to complete for my Level 4 qualification which I am due to sit in the new year, before starting my professional exams in 2026. My role can be challenging at times especially when learning new skills and processes, but equally I feel very motivated to push on within the group, and I can see the amazing opportunities that lay ahead for me. One of my favourite parts of working at SMH Group is knowing that my work can make a difference to our client’s and the community around. As SMH Group is not just an accountancy firm, but also offers other services such as commercial finance, wills and probate, marketing, and financial services, then our work can make a real difference to the client, being able to help them in all aspects of their business, which resonates with one of our company values of “one firm”. Outside of work, I am a big supporter of Barnsley FC, enjoy skiing, and regularly attend my local church.
