At SMH Group, our Barnsley office, SMH Reed Smith, is one of only nine accredited verifiers in the UK for the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) scheme. SMH Reed Smith has been delivering RTFO verification services since 2011, helping businesses comply with regulations and maximise the benefits of low-carbon fuel incentives.
What is the RTFO scheme?
The Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) is a government initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transport and encouraging the production and use of renewable fuels. Introduced in 2008, the scheme requires fuel suppliers who supply more than 450,000 litres of fuel per year to ensure a certain percentage comes from renewable sources.
The RTFO covers road transport fuels, as well as fuels used in non-road mobile machinery, rail, and heating applications such as boilers. Businesses meeting the requirements of the scheme can claim Renewable Transport Fuel Certificates (RTFCs), which can then be traded or used to meet sustainability targets.
To participate in the scheme, businesses must have their fuel submissions verified by an approved RTFO verifier. This ensures that reported renewable fuel usage is accurate, compliant, and meets government sustainability criteria.
