This year marks 30 years since Sutton McGrath, the founding company of SMH Group, first opened it doors. What began in 1995 as a small practice called Sutton McGrath in Sheffield has grown into a full-service group of accountancy, financial and advisory firms across the region.
Sutton McGrath is the original name of SMH Sutton McGrath Hartley with the ‘Hartley’ being added at a later date.
From those early days in Sheffield to then opening up a second office in Chesterfield and then being the founding company of SMH Group, it has been quite the journey. Our team has grown, our services have expanded, and our commitment to clients has remained as strong as ever.

1995 – David Sutton and his wife Gillian (nee McGrath) start Sutton McGrath
2001 – James Hartley joins Sutton McGrath
2003 – James Hartley becomes a partner
2005 – Jonathon Dickens joins as an apprentice
2014 – Jonathon Dickens becomes a partner
2017 – Jonathon Dickens and James Hartley complete a management buyout of David Sutton and James Hartley becomes managing partner.
2018 – Bullock Woodburn merges with SMH Group becoming the first new entity into the group.
2019 – Haywoods merges with SMH Group
2019 – Andertons Liversidge merges with SMH Group
2021 – Jolliffe Cork merges with SMH Group
2022 – Malcolm J Harris merges with SMH Group
2022 – BCL Accountants merges with SMH Group
2023 – D’Arcy Howard merges with SMH Group
2023 – Howard Matthews merges with SMH Group
2024 – Sheards merges with SMH Group
2025 – Jonathon Dickens becomes CEO and James Hartley becomes Chairman
2025 – Reed Smith merges with SMH Group
