What is a Savings Related Share Option Plan?

A Savings Related Share Option Plan (SRSOP) is a type of share option plan that offers employees the opportunity to purchase shares in their employer’s company. It is a tax-advantaged scheme, which means that employees can benefit from certain tax breaks when they participate.

Under an SRSOP, employees are granted options to purchase shares in their employer’s company at a predetermined price. The options are usually exercisable after a certain period of time has elapsed, known as the “savings period”. During the savings period, employees can save a portion of their pre-tax earnings into a designated savings account. At the end of the savings period, the savings are used to exercise the options.

The tax advantages of an SRSOP include the ability to defer income tax and National Insurance contributions on the savings used to exercise the options until the shares are sold. In addition, employees may be eligible for capital gains tax relief when they sell the shares, depending on the circumstances.

To qualify for an SRSOP, certain conditions must be met. The plan must be available to all employees, and the savings period must be at least three years. The maximum amount that can be saved in any one tax year is also limited.
