Capital Gains Tax
At SMH Accounting & Business Advisory we are ready to offer capital gains tax advice on what can be a complex and often confusing area, which is why we offer a range of services to help you manage your CGT affairs effectively.
So, what is capital gains tax? Capital Gains Tax is a tax on the profit made when you sell or dispose of an asset that has increased in value. The amount of CGT you pay depends on the gain you make, your income and the type of asset you dispose of.
Capital Gains Tax Payment Date
So, how soon does tax have to be paid? There are a couple of deadlines to keep in mind around reporting and paying Capital Gains Tax when you are a resident in the UK. These include:
- If you sold a residential property in the UK after the 27th of October 2021: You must report any capital gains and make payment within 60 days.
- If you use a Self-Assessment tax return and have other capital gains to reports, you must report the Capital Gains Tax responsibilities by December 31st of the tax year following the sale.
If you miss the deadline to report and pay any capital gains tax, you may be subject to interest or penalties.
